At Origins Behavioral HealthCare, we recognize that addiction damages and disrupts a person’s relationship to body, mind, spirit, and others, which results in suffering and isolation.
Brokenness can quickly become overwhelming and seem insurmountable.
Healing begins when individuals acknowledge this sense of disconnectedness and allow others to partner with them toward restoration paths. In 12-Step programs integral to Origins’ recovery program, restoration comes through a spiritual program of action.
The Twelfth Step of Alcoholics Anonymous begins with the phrase, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps…,” yet many who seek recovery feel defeated when they hear this because of ideas and conceptions about what is and is not spiritual.
Confusion about what it means to be religious versus spiritual can arise.
These terms are sometimes used interchangeably to the detriment of those not seeking religious life but healing. When we discuss spirituality with patients, it can support and reconnect them to a chosen religious experience or identity. But it can also help them connect to their deep sense of life, healing, support, compassion, dignity, and, above all, hope.
Our Spiritual Care Services support patients and families in integrating spiritual connections.
Origins’ philosophy is summed up well in the words of our chief clinical officer, Dr. John Dyben: “Spirituality is one’s way of life reflected in their thinking, speaking, acting, and in the quality of their relationships with self, others, and all of life.”
This spiritual connection supports long-term recovery from addiction. Addressing the complex spiritual needs that arise during treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders offers patients an opportunity to explore what a meaningful and purposeful life can be.
These spiritual needs can engage grief and loss. They include a desire to search for meaning, hope, relational healing, and enhanced self-worth and support. Building upon basic recovery principles and exercises, our Spiritual Care Services empower patients to tap into spiritual recovery resources that promote peace of mind and restore injured relationships
Patients can meet with a Spiritual Care Professional anytime to assess their specific needs.
Our program also offers support through psychoeducational and process groups. Each day of an individual’s treatment is an opportunity to move away from diminishing and destructive behaviors and toward life-affirmation, connection, freedom, and hope.
