Gender-Separate Recovery for Men

We know that gender makes a huge difference in addiction treatment: men have unique concerns and pressures that complicate and contribute to substance use. Men also have unique ways of coming to terms with their problems. In Origins’ focused environment, men can learn to model acceptable behaviors, improve how they relate to each other, and experience a sense of camaraderie that is lacking during active addiction. We provide a safe space and remove the stigma where men can find lifelong sobriety and healing. Our highly-credentialed addiction specialists are trained to address these deeply rooted issues that affect men and clear a path for mental, emotional, and spiritual fulfillment.

Men in Early Adulthood and Adulthood

Men are more likely to use alcohol or illicit drugs than women, and young men — ages 18 to 25 in particular — have significantly higher rates of substance use disorders than other age groups. Men are also less likely to admit they have an alcohol or drug problem and are less willing to talk about mental illnesses, such as depression or anxiety. Young men often face pressures to be independent, strong, and resilient and independent. Many men are taught to keep their feelings to themselves, which not only leads to self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, but prevents them from getting the help they need. Together, these problems can cause young men to have a “failure to launch” into adulthood, responsibility, and wholeness.

Men in Middle and Later Life Stages

Aging can deeply affect men’s bodies and their sense of self. As men grow older, men may feel as though they are losing the vitality and energy that defines who they are. This demographic also frequently includes first responders or military veterans who are at high risk for mental health complications and substance use, and also includes men who have experienced life changes such as difficulties in their career, loss of a loved one, or marital concerns. The resulting emotional toll leads many men in the middle and later stages of life to withdraw and turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism
