Personality Disorders

Recognizing Personality Disorders
Personality disorders can range in intensity. The extra difficulty arises as many men with personality disorders believe their thoughts and feelings are normal. Childhood experiences and genetics play a role. Experts believe specific experiences trigger chemical brain reactions that may lead to personality disorders.
Categorization of Personality Disorders
- Cluster A: Characterized by odd, eccentric thinking or behavior, this category includes paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorder.
- Cluster B: Characterized by dramatic, overly emotional, or unpredictable thinking or behavior, this category includes histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline personality disorder.
- Cluster C: Characterized by anxious, fearful thinking or behavior, this category includes avoidant, dependen, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

Individualized Personality Disorder Treatment
Every category and type of personality disorder requires a treatment method specific to its unique characteristics. Men respond to treatment in their own way, so physicians and clinicians must be adaptable.
The Origins Recovery Center treatment team will conduct a thorough and complete physical exam that includes in-depth questions about your symptoms, lab tests, and other screenings.
Your program may include psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic testing. We’ll be working alongside you to evaluate and design a plan for healing thoroughly.
Personality Disorders and Addiction
Men often use drugs and alcohol to help mask the symptoms of a personality disorder without an awareness of their mental health condition. A cutting-edge dual diagnosis program like the one offered at Origins Recovery Center can help men overcome the root cause of addiction.
Borderline Personality Disorder in Men
Affecting just under 2% of the general population, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can cause men to have trouble handling their emotions and behaviors. Men with BPD are more likely to participate in unsafe behavior including reckless driving or unprotected sex.
Men with Borderline Personality Disorder can experience bouts of anger, depression, and anxiety lasting from a couple hours to several days.
Another symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder is known as “splitting” wherein a person will view things only in extremes of positive and negative.
Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder in men usually involves pharmacotherapy (prescribed medications) and psychotherapy.
