Trauma Therapies

men-670

For many men, alcohol or drug use can be a symptom of an underlying mental health concern, such as trauma. If these core issues go untreated, relapse may occur, and addiction can persist, despite repeated attempts at recovery.

We help each patient overcome any barriers to wellness and sobriety that they may face. As experienced clinicians, we know that deeply rooted traumatic experiences are common among men who are struggling to recover. Our staff is highly trained to provide specialized services for men of all ages who have experienced trauma or PTSD.

Each member of Origins’ team — from medical and clinical to support and executive staff — is educated about trauma and the importance of creating a trauma-informed treatment environment. This ensures that we offer the men in our care a safe space where they can recover from invisible wounds that perpetuate addiction.

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Trauma means something different to each person who experiences it. It can come from witnessing or experiencing abuse, disaster, violence, the loss of a loved one, extreme stress or burnout, physical injury or illness. Regardless of the cause, trauma can lead to socialization issues, relationship problems, anxiety, and fear.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, often known as PTSD, is the most commonly known manifestation of trauma. Though frequently associated with military veterans, PTSD can affect both men and children who have been through traumatic events as well. Experiencing sexual, emotional, or physical abuse, severe accidents, childhood neglect, and natural disasters or tragedies can all lead to PTSD.

PTSD symptoms can interfere with an individual’s ability to live a happy, healthy life. Symptoms can include:

  • Excessive drug or alcohol use
  • Unwarranted anger or emotional outbursts
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Withdrawal from others
  • Dissociative mental experiences or flashbacks
  • Inability to function in daily life
  • Insomnia
  • Panic or overreaction to events
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Involuntary thoughts about a traumatic event

Symptoms of PTSD tend to emerge slowly, and many people do not receive treatment right away. PTSD can be frustrating, debilitating, and even dangerous for the individual or those around them — undiagnosed PTSD can make life unbearable. But there is hope. We offer renowned clinical care for addicted sufferers of trauma and PTSD.

Treatment Modalities for PTSD

Trauma and stress-related disorders and PTSD require specialized therapies directed at addressing trauma. Interventions include therapies that help the individual reprocess the memories and reactions associated with the experience, enabling them to develop healthier coping mechanisms. At Origins Recovery Center, our goal is to give our patients the necessary skills so that they do not need to rely on substances to feel “comfortable in their own skin.”

Treatment at Origins depends on each person’s unique case and may consist of evidence-based interventions such:

  • Neurofeedback
  • Biofeedback
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Group process or individual therapy
  • Meditation and mindfulness training

These therapies anticipate trauma triggers, deescalate fear, manage anger or mood swings, measure anxiety responses, and reprocess traumatic memories, all of which are proven effective for symptoms of PTSD.

Gender-Specific Treatment

We are passionate advocates for the gender-specific treatment of co-occurring disorders and addiction, and we have remained on the cutting edge of research and modalities. A patient’s background always informs our treatment for PTSD, trauma, and other similar disorders, which includes experiences unique to males.

PTSD in men is frequently associated with military experience, but it also affects others who have never been on the battlefield. Abuse and neglect of all kinds can lead to trauma that exacerbates drug and alcohol use. It is essential to understand that men express and process trauma differently than women do. Men often grow up expected to be “strong” and resilient. As a result, they may be less willing to open up about their trauma-related difficulties. Our gender-separate men’s programming uses engaging and approachable therapies to help our patients discover trust and emotional openness in a judgment-free environment.
