Staff Spotlight – Newell Bentley

Newell Bentley  – Senior Alumni Care Coordinator

What brought you to the field of addiction treatment? What brought you to Origins?

I had been in and out of treatment, letting myself and my family down again and again. I finally found myself willing to do whatever was needed and letting someone else help me. That led to sober living. I started to follow a different path, and one day there was a job opening at Origins. Everything told me that it would not work, that I should just stay where I was and be comfortable, which is what I had done most of my life. I used to let fear of the unknown stop me. With this opportunity, I faced the fear and tried the unknown.

If there was only one thing you could tell us about working within your specialty area, what would it be?

Keeping up with alumni after they leave treatment is by far the most rewarding part of my job. It can be good or bad when they leave but hearing about their success or struggle matters. To help someone who has lost their way is still the best part of this job.

What have you learned through your experience working in treatment?

You must have very tough skin and not let the little things drive you crazy. At the same time, keep an open mind and heart for the new man who walks through our doors.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m from Texas. I love to hunt, fish, and be with my dog. I found the love of my life and will be getting married in January. I’m a very simple person, but my addiction took almost everything from me and nearly cost me my life. So being able just to do simple things and have purpose again in my life is the best promise I have received, and the doors just keep opening. Who knows what the future will bring? All I know is that working this program with God keeps getting better, and I get to help others on my way.
