Jerry Green – Alumni Services Liaison

What brought you to the field of addiction treatment? What brought you to Origins?

I have been involved in raising funds and building a treatment center for the past five years. What brought me to Origins was a miracle. I found out about the job in a very strange way. I researched Origins and jumped at the chance to become part of this amazing team and for the opportunity to share my experience, strength, and hope. I have witnessed the amazing miracles of sobriety, and I want to help others experience the same thing.

If there was only one thing you could tell us about working within your specialty area, what would it be?

My real purpose is on page 77 of the Big Book: “To fit myself to be of maximum service to God and the people about me.” I have spent the last 12 years taking action, and I continue to take the steps that keep me fit to be of maximum service. God has brought me here to this place and presented me with many opportunities to do just that.

What have you learned through your experience working in treatment?

My job is to carry the message of the 12-Steps, but I cannot force patients to accept it. I must carry the message through my life and actions and then through my words to be effective.

Do you hold any credentials or certifications?

I have a Master Electrician license. I served on the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of the Concho Valley’s board before moving to Brownsville, Texas.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

My wife and I are involved in a 12-Step fellowship, where we spend much of our time. We have four children. (We had five, but this disease killed one.) We have ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. I enjoy fishing, swimming, and gardening with my wife. We have built a little “sanctuary” everywhere we have ever lived, as we love spending time outside.
