Ira Slaid – DIRECTOR OF RECOVERY CARE
Ira started working with Origins in 2017 as an on-call driver. He next served as a Recovery Advocate, Recovery Advocate Supervisor, and Recovery Advocate Manager before moving into the Director of Recovery Care position in August 2022. Ira attended Alvin Community College (2001) and the University of Texas at Brownsville (2002-2004). He has successfully convinced patients to remain in treatment while adequately presenting the 12-Steps. Ira enjoys supporting Recovery Advocates to offer accountability and consistency, helping to maintain a safe environment for patients physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
What brought you to the field of addiction treatment?
The two people that helped me get sober had been new hires at Origins, and seeing and hearing how they were helping other alcoholics/addicts sounded like the best possible way to spend my working hours.
What brought you to Origins?
Trial and error! My previous sponsor worked at Origins and is an alumni. He took me through the work in a way that made living this way very doable. I wanted to do the same.
If there was only one thing you could tell us about working within your specialty area, what would it be?
Loud encouragement is something that I have learned to be very effective. This includes patients and staff. I have found that this works very well with just about everyone and gives patients some positive feedback early on, even if they are just going to group.
What have you learned through your experience working in treatment?
I have learned valuable lessons in leadership and the different ways to apply what I have learned. I have learned a more effective and practical application of the 12 Steps in my work life. I have also learned that approaching tasks with the idea of helping has made this work more rewarding.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy movies, golf, spending time with my mom, and enjoying sci-fi in any form. I typically visit my mom on the weekends and spend time with her in Brownsville. I am close to family and friends, I go to the gym, and try to get as much Nintendo Switch time as possible. I am active in the recovery community in Brownsville and SPI, and when I find time, I have a service commitment that I really enjoy doing. If there are any local bands playing, I always want to go and check them out.
