A New Year: Being Spiritually Awake Changes Everything

Jan 10, 2022

Jerry Green | Recovery Services Manager

A New Year is upon us! What a time for rebirth, renewal, and a glorious opportunity to serve others.

I must remember that this is not about making resolutions and resolving to do better.

This New Year is about asking my Higher Power to continue removing the character defects that stand in the way of my usefulness to Him and others as I continue the work He began at my birth. Everything that has happened to me, good and bad, was part of a Grand Design to bring me to this moment.

I was born a selfish and self-centered alcoholic and addict, and I remain so today but for the Power of God.

The results have been much more noticeable in the 12 ½ years since I surrendered to this 12-Step process.

My wife and I have been talking about this over the holidays. We must stay surrendered and teachable in each moment for this work to continue. As we look back over the past year, we can see how much He has taught us through our new city, job, friends, and vision of His will for us.

This new awareness did not happen because we are great people but because of the blessing of the gift of desperation.

Crushed by sadness and overwhelmed by joy, we have experienced defeat and victory, and we remain amazed and grateful for all life’s beauty in each moment.

The amount of balance and manageability that exists in our lives today was not a result of our planning or our power.

It results from surrender to our Higher Power — action by action and moment by moment.

Continuing and persisting as directed by the Divine Spark, regardless of what we think, feel, and believe in any given moment, are the keys to dependence on God. We can’t wait to see what God has planned next.
